Harnessing Quorum Quenching and Probiotic Algae-Bacteria Interactions for Sustainable Aquaculture

Aquaculture faces increasing challenges from infectious diseases, excessive antibiotic use and the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), highlighting the urgent need for sustainable disease management strategies. Beneficial microalgae–bacteria interactions have emerged as a promising nature-based approach that not only enhances aquatic animal health but also improves environmental sustainability. In this study, the application of quorum-quenching (QQ) probiotic bacteria associated with microalgae that interfere with bacterial quorum sensing (QS), thereby attenuating pathogen virulence will be demonstrated. This includes the recent laboratory, pilot-scale, and industry validation studies to demonstrate the potential of integrating quorum-quenching probiotics with microalgae to develop effective and environmentally friendly alternatives for disease prevention in aquaculture. The presentation will also discuss the translation of these innovations into practical applications through academia–industry collaboration and their contribution to circular aquaculture, the One Health approach, and global efforts to mitigate AMR. Harnessing probiotic microalgae–bacteria interactions therefore represent a transformative strategy for developing resilient, productive, and sustainable aquaculture systems.
