Natural products derived from botanicals are ubiquitous across the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. However, successfully transitioning a botanical from the laboratory bench to the consumer market requires a multifaceted research strategy driven by a singular concept: visualising the ending. In translational natural product research, the “visualised ending” is not merely a published paper; it is a safe, legally compliant, and commercially viable finished product. This plenary explores how working backward from the intended market claim and regulatory classification dictates the foundational hard science, sustainable process optimization, and quality control metrics required for success. Key themes explored in this plenary include:
Ultimately, by designing experiments with the final regulatory classification and consumer messaging firmly in mind, researchers can efficiently navigate market segmentation while ensuring that the primary objective—uncompromising consumer safety—remains at the forefront of the process.
